What does it mean to be a woman?

For me, the answer is simple: love.

When we place the words woman and love together, motherhood often comes to mind. It certainly did when I found this precious photo of my son. He was only nine days old. I can still remember holding him—so tiny, so new—and feeling an overwhelming wave of love fill the room.

What Does it Mean to be a Woman?

But the more I reflected on it, the clearer it became: all of my roles as a woman revolve around love.

Love is the foundation of how I show up in the world. It shapes how I care for my family, nurture my friendships, and support the community around me. It guides how I show up as a wife, sister, auntie, friend, neighbour, teacher, and community member.

At the heart of all these roles is creating a loving home where people feel safe, supported, and deeply cared for.

Creating a Home that Feels Like Love

Through the lens of Feng Shui, love has also played a central role in my journey.

Long before I formally studied Feng Shui, I felt a deep calling to create a home that felt like a sanctuary—a place filled with peace, warmth, and connection.

After my son was born, that intention became even stronger. I wanted my boy—and my husband, for that matter—to look forward to walking through the front door each day.

I wanted our home to be their soft place to fall.  An oasis of calm and nurturing in an often busy and chaotic world.

Over time, I realized that this instinct to create a loving home has a name.

The Path of the Hearthcrafter

Years ago, I came across the term Hearthcrafter, and it resonated deeply with me.

A Hearthcrafter is the keeper of the hearth. Traditionally, it is a role held by women—a spiritual path rooted in love and in the belief that the home is a place of beauty, power, and protection.

The hearth has always symbolized the heart of the home. It is where warmth is generated, where nourishment is prepared, and where people gather to share stories, laughter, and comfort.

A Hearthcrafter understands that the energy of the home matters. She tends to that energy through heart-centered acts like decorating, cooking, cleansing, and caring for the space she holds.

But her role goes far beyond physical tasks.

Holding Space for Others

At her core, a Hearthcrafter holds safe and loving space for the people in her life.

She creates an environment where others feel free to grow, express themselves, and thrive.

She is often the emotional barometer of the household, sensing when something feels off and gently guiding the energy back into balance.

Her intuition, compassion, and practicality become her superpowers.

She is a natural healer.
A giver of the very best hugs.
A grower of all things beautiful.

She is the keeper of dreams and the holder of secrets. The one who notices when someone needs comfort, encouragement, or simply a quiet moment of care.

A Calling Rooted in Love

Being a Hearthcrafter is not simply about maintaining a home. It is about nurturing the energy and spirit of the space and the people within it.

It is a sacred role—one rooted deeply in love.

When a woman tends to her home with intention and heart, she creates something powerful: a place where people feel nourished, supported, and deeply at peace.

And in today’s fast-moving world, that gift may be more important than ever.  In fact, that’s the Homehearted way.

Happy International Women’s Day!
