Brightly wrapped boxes under the tree, colourful gift bags stuffed with sparkly tissue paper and velvety stockings bursting with little surprises … who doesn’t love the excitement of Christmas gift giving!
But how about adding something a little extra special to the tradition … one that focuses on wrapping and giving your feelings to loved ones this holiday season?
To quote cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, “now that’s the gift that keeps on giving the whole year!”
Christmas Love Notes
Christmas Love Notes are a lovely way to do just that. The card features the open-ended sentence “What I love about you…” and you simply fill in the blank. Each person completes a card for every member of the family … including your home!
Taking time to think about the things you love about family, and then actually sharing these sentiments, adds an extra sprinkle of joy to Christmas morning.
Five easy steps
- Download my Christmas Love Notes template.
- Print out enough cards for every member of the family, including your home. If there are four of you, then everyone gets four cards – three for the people and one for the home.
- Stop by your local dollar store and pick up some pretty little boxes. If you have some crafters at home, purchase plain boxes and decorate them together. Don’t forget to decorate the Home box too!
- Encourage the family to write as many things as they can on the notes. If your little ones don’t know how to write, no problem. Simply have the conversation and complete the Love Cards on their behalf. What a wonderful activity to do together!
- On Christmas morning, take turns sharing your love notes out loud with the lucky recipients. Afterwards, tuck the cards away in the special boxes. Trust me – these are precious mementos and will be cherished!
How to include your Home
Including your home is a lovely way to reinforce the idea that it is a valued member of the family. Not sure what to write? Here are some examples:
See? It’s easy to come up with things you love about your home!
I store the boxes on my coffee table and read the cards every Christmas season. My great aunt Alice passed away in 2021 and seeing her handwritten Love Card to me was truly special.
So forget about gifting your loved ones a subscription to the Jelly of the Month Club this year! Give the gift of appreciation with Christmas Love Cards and create a yearly tradition that fills your home and heart with warmth, gratitude and joy.
That’s the HomeHearted Way.
